Go Ahead
System build & integration

Go Ahead is one of the UK's leading providers of public transport. Over 900 million passengers travel on their buses & trains each year and they pride themselves on having the greenest and youngest bus fleet of the major UK operators. They were the 1st UK public transport company to have been certified with the Carbon Trust Standard.

Enablon were in the process of implementing a new CSR system for Go Ahead and had a huge number of indicators/KPIs to consolidate across their differing transport divisions, rail and road. SustainIT became involved right at the beginning of this process to:

  • set up the Enablon system appropriately to capture all the different indicators
  • do the system implementation and integration
  • complete rigorous testing across multiple sites
  • ensure 'go live' was seamless and on time

Britannia
Consultancy & advice

Britannia have a mission to be known as Britain's best mutual - an organisation to which their members and their staff are proud to belong. Sustainability & CSR, particularly on their employee care and community investment front, are deeply embedded in their business. Being ethical, socially responsible and a model of compliance is core to their business.

Britannia had embarked on a major project to evaluate their CSR reporting from top to bottom. Despite being refreshingly and impressively in the forefront of CSR commitment, they engaged SustainIT in an advisory capacity. Charlie personally became involved on 3 key levels:

  • Policy advice, clarification on GRI and their other obligations
  • Indicator creation - what KPIs were important and how their measurement could lead to energy and business efficiencies
  • System review - an overview of the available software, particularly Credit 360 and Enablon

ITG are the 4th largest tobacco group in the world which manufactures, markets and sells a comprehensive range of cigarettes, tobaccos, rolling papers, filter tubes and cigars. They are focused on increasing shareholder value but have an ongoing commitment to operating responsibly.

3.1. Implementation

ITG had already selected Enablon as their preferred system, but were experiencing some issues with its implementation due to the complexity and scope of their global operation and due to the depth of reporting they desired, thanks to their own rigour and high standards. Working with 2 dedicated ITG project managers SustainIT became involved right at the beginning of this process to:

  • set up the Enablon system from scratch appropriately to capture all the different indicators and allow it to be scaled up in future
  • incorporate regional and country variations
  • set up documentation and processes to drive the system efficiently
  • complete robust testing across multiple global sites
  • ensure 'go live' was seamless and on time and that all users were up to speed
  • create and manage training workshops and modules

ITG have a global operation (including several sites in the developing world), with over 100 sites and 300 users; they now track and report monthly on well over 1,000 indicators.

3.2. Support & Upgrades

Since 2004, when the system was first implemented, ITG have striven to remain in the forefront of CSR compliance. In addition, their business has both grown and developed. To keep pace with this, SustainIT have been constantly involved with ongoing support for all ITG's CSR initiatives and also to keep the Enablon system flexible and scaleable to accommodate these changes.

  • SustainIT have taken this ongoing additional complexity and expansion in their stride and added further bespoke elements to the system
  • They performed a 'gap analysis' to provide ITG with information & recommendations about the most effective upgrade solutions and the costs asociated with this and appropriate timings
  • SustainIT have provided ITG with a dedicated resource and have also created a bespoke and highly effective 'traffic light' system to ensure ITG have the highest standards of data collection, accuracy and timeliness
  • ITG's information is both qualitative and quantitative and consistently hits +99% accuracy

3.3. New business integration - Altadis

In 2008 ITG purchased the Spanish cigar giant Altadis, including its interests in South America.

The process of business integration is underway and this will add 50-60 sites to the Enablon CSR system.

SustainIT is working hand in glove with ITG to meet the challenges of:

  • Incorporating all these new sites smoothly into the overall CSR system
  • Adding historic ITG data to the Altadis files
  • Overcoming language and cultural differences
  • Integrating very different styles of reporting and different KPIs
  • Retraining staff in Europe via workshops
  • Ensuring the 'go live' deadline is met
